hey guys i think im going to start keeping africans, i need some help though.

1) This tank will be a show tank so i need some suggestions for colorful fish to put in. the tank will be mostly rock/stone with sand substrate. so even though this is really about what i want..treat it as if it was your own tank, what colorful fish would u put in.

2) I've already been told that i cant mix mbuna, haps, and peacocks as a beginner, but what type is best in your opinion?

thanks for the help..

im pritty sure i am going to make it a peacock tank..after researching a little, i like them the most. i red in another thread to not mix peacocks that are the same colors? can someone tell me why? do i overstock to cut down aggression or does it make a difference? im going to be running two Penguin 350s on the 55

Peacocks are not too aggressive in my experiences. Not like Mbuna. I have mixed peacocks and haps, also mbuna and haps. Depends on the species. Peacocks you may only want 6 or 7 in the 55. IMO I don't see a reason why you can't mix colors if it is a show tank either.

i would use all male peacocks. you can't use haps (most of them get too large) in a 55 gallon. there are dwarf mbuna that you can use in a 55 gallon, i.e. demasonis, saulosis, crabro's, yellow labs (not all together, but pick one or two species and mix them). i would pick male peacocks of all different colors.

There is no reason you cant have different color peacocks in a show tank.

My guess is that the reason that was said is because they probably wanted to breed peacocks and when you do that you want to stick to only one species (one color) because hybrids/cross breeding is looked down upon in the hobby.

I had a peacock show tank once and loved it. I would agree with 6 or 7 if that is what you choose to go with =] There is no reason you can't mix different colors/species. Females dont show color like the males do so for a show tank you may want to stick with all males.

Good Luck and post pictures during the process!!

Depends what colors you want. Nice yellows(Bengas, Maleri, Lemon Jakes), or blues(Ngara Flametail, Chilumba, Mdoka). There are just so many to choose from, mixed colors like the Blue Neons, Flavescents, Lwandas, Ethylwynnae. Albinos, Ngara, Rubyscenes, Eureka Reds. Kandeense, Maylandi Sulphurhead, Masinje are all nice too.

He must of read something I wrote, he means mixing peacocks that have similar coloration, like two different sunshine peacocks. This is because one will be dominate over the other, the less dominate may not show color.... That is why... otherwise the above informations in great advice to take!!!!

Kandeense, Maylandi Sulphurhead

I love these two, but if you decide to go with them do a tank of them only... or species only of one or the other... They are more chilled compared to other peacocks and do not fair as well as the other listed
