Starting a 55g Malawi tank, NEED HELP!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
You can put Peacocks/Haps in the same tank, however, do not put MBUNA or tangs in the same tank as a beginner...

Usually, I would discourage peacocks in with a hap tank b/c they don't thrive, but, if you can get them as big as the haps then they will become one of the dominant fish in the tank. It is all about pecking order in a "male" tank.. You want everyone to feel comfortable to show off their natural colors. This is usually best done in bigger tanks 125+ so if you are going to do a 55g tank I suggest at tops 10 different fish b/c they only have about 3 foot to swim in.. The number one rule to keeping african cichlids is to have a LONG tank, depth really doesn't matter, but length is where you will see the different personalities. Hope this helps.

its cool drag me in... Depth is not as major, but it still helps if you have a four foot tank... a 120 is much better than say a 55, or even a 110...

plus I can get three 120s where only two 125s will fit!!! lol... great advice fishfreak!

Mike has a point about the sunshines and one not showing good color because of the other dominant. Maylandi or Kandeense species only isn't much fun unless you are breeding. I have a wild trio of Kandeense that turned out to be a reverse trio and the sub dominant male shows no color other than the frost on his top. He looks pretty much like the female. My male is awesome looking though. I took the male Maylandi Sulphur head that was dominant out of the growout tank and the others have just started to show a new male. The are very dark in color but they look awesome when they get fired up to breed.

the 55 is a long so i guess that helps and i think i get what you guyes are saying about the colors..so around 2 different species would work? 4 of one species and 3 of another species with a different color?

i want to make an all male tank so far the only peacocks that i want for the tank are the lemon jakes..should i do a whole tank of these (all male) or what could i mix that would look nice.

I have a mbuna tank and there is zero aggression in it for some reason. It isn't stocked heavy, even though most say to stock it heavy.
