Starting a monster/arowana grow-out tank...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Red or black hook silver dollars go well if they're big enough

Hi if you want an all silver tank you could have silver sharks or tinfoil barbs or red hooks or silver dollars, and bichirs are fantastic for the lower regions of the tank, and dats are a good idea but ive only got one in my 180gal same size as yours and he just rips the real plants to bits but like you said you like artificial plants so shouldnt be a problem
Cheers steve

impressive! someone who actually does a bit of research instead of just popping up saying "I just bought a silver aro, what will I need? ..the biggest tank my parents allows me to have is a 125."

kudos!

there are some barbs that will school! and if you can fit an aro for life you can probably fit anything but a rtc to.

yes.. you will probably need a tank somewhere around the dimensions mentioned. (9x3) even if you could probably get away with something smaller..

fish fillet, shrimp and pellets are all good aro-food. if you can find some sort of dead but whole fish that would be great since you get the skeleton and other goodies to.

good luck on this project of yours, we'll be looking forward to updates!

Yeah, well I'm finally in a position where I can even HAVE a tank that big in the near future (moved from a 1 bedroom apt to a 3 bedroom house!) and I've always loved the look of arrows. If I weren't in the US I'd be looking for some of those lovely Asians, but alas my country has to be mean like that.
I got the 180 recently by trading my 125gal towards it, and I definitely have plans to build a monster tank in the near future when the weather is nicer so I can actually work on it outside (hate fumes and sawdust in the house!) But, in the mean time I'm snowed in and I have to keep myself entertained somehow.

not very pc.. but I think silvers look better than asians.. and I often get the impression that many asian aro owners only keep them for show.. a humongous silver is way cooler than any asian in my book!

yeah... I suppose I am not all THAT broke up about it... the silvers are sleaker looking. Though, I do like some of the color variations of the asians.

So, tank mates I'm thinking are:
A school of Silver Dollars (whichever type happens to be on sale, probably red hooks) How many would you suggest?
For bottom-fish, I was thinking some kind of shiney catfish. Species suggestions? I kinda like the idea of a "silver fish" tank.

I'd go with at least 5. You can try 4-lined pims or pictus cats. They're pretty silver and super easy to find. Pictus might now grow fast or large enough, but a little school of them is pretty cool looking and you don't want the aro munching on cats for the safety of the aro. I will warn you though that I had a 5" pim that killed a 9" silver, but I haven't heard the same from anyone else. I'm sure there are other options that I'm not thinking about. Silver datnoids?

to address the sand issue that no one has touched on yet, id suggest black, all silver fish on black sand would look pretty sweet, and amount of silver dollars, probably like 5 or 6 would look nice, and for a silverish catfish, tigrinus catfish have that silverish and black look which would also match your tank

hope to see some pics on the progress of building your tank

I'm going to be setting up the tank this weekend and will get pics of it then. There won't be much in it yet, but at least I can play around with the aquascaping for a while. Anyone know any body in the Vt/NH area that has decent deals on schooling fish and driftwood?
