Starting a ray tank.

Awesome, thanks for the tips :)

So now my only issue is the stocking of the tank... I can't really decide what i want to do. At first i was all about doing another Jardini/Motoro tank... but after reading some of the threads here, and even though i had a pleasant experience with my first Jardini... i am a bit turned off by that idea.

I can't really decide what to do, maybe you guys will have a few suggestions? Maybe i could do just the sting ray for now and get some non-arowana tank mates for him until i get a bigger tank, and then invest in growing a big silver or black arowana.

what about a leii aro??

For your filtration Imo you should do a sump or wet dry. Then you dont have to worry about the heaters you just put them in there. Everything else has been addressed properly.

I think i will stick with a canister for the 75 gallon and save the wet/dry for the larger tank when i get it.

I thought about the leii aro and will look into it more. They aren't as attractive in my opinion, but i haven't seen many adults. Their temperment makes them more attracitve though!

And 50% water change every week? In my old tank i was doing 25% a week, is 50% normal?

Do you guys have any other thoughts for possible tank mates? I've been looking at the marble motoro's and they seem very nice. I'm looking for that right balance of attractiveness and hearty. I was also thinking about putting a silver dollar school in there and maybe a gold nugget pleco.

yes 50% once a week...
the canister will be fine... mabe add a HOB filter later is needed.... severums, geos make nice colorful tank mates..plecos are a gamble..some have luck some dont.. please consider the amount of waste a ray produces and the fact you have a small amount of water.. till you have another tank i would only consider the ray and maybe the aro.....

Thanks for the advice. I am definitely taking the bio-load into account, which is why i am going to buy the eheim 2028 instead of 2026. The 2028 is for a 150 gallon, so i am hoping that i can get by with the small tank for a year or so with this set up.

Do most of you use air stones in your ray tanks? Can someone suggest the best way to put enough oxygen in the water for them? I was planning on running just 1 whisper pump and 2 air stones. Should i be doing more?

run 2 hydro sponges instead of the stones... extra filtration and if you ever have a power failure you can hook battery air pumps to them and keep some filtration going

same air bubbles and they break the water surface :) do the same as a air stone but add some filtration and alow for it in power outage.. go but 2 big ones :)
