starting a reef tank

was just wondering if i need a p skimmer if i dont have fish in tank. 20 g tanks is it best to get algee growing frist before putting in corals . new at this and not to sure yet what will i need?

but i was at one of my local fs and he told me if tank is small with good water flow and good lighthing and good source of food and you do good water changes you dont need it and then showed me a tank runnibg four 4 years abd didnt have one

with out fish you dont need one, just keep up on your water changes.
 
also im not sure your trying to do with the algae, but i would discourage you from trying to grow any algae in the tank. even coraline algae, as eventually that becomes a pain to clean off the glass

can i grow plankton then is that whats best to feed. and how new guy here

depends on the corals, most are photosynthetic(meaning they use light like plants). no you dont want to encourage phytoplankton to grow in your tank, you can buy bottles of it to feed the corals that wont grow in the tank.
 
2o gallons is a No No for reef...unless you're an experienced reefer or you got soft corals. Your water parameters will swing wildly in such a small volume of water. BTW Stay away from SPS.
