Starting a steel stand for 650g

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Hi all,

I'm just about to start building a new stand for a new 650g tank. The aquarium is going to be 36 inches tall with a 96 x 48 footprint. The stand is is going to be 42 inches tall and made of steel tube...either rectangle or square. I have a few questions...
  1. Rectangle tube or square tube?
  2. How thick should the steel tube wall be?
  3. If the top of the tank is 78 inches above the floor (I want it above eye level), does that leave enough room above the tank? It's a standard 8ft ceiling.

This is my first tank (except a 10g tank when I was a kid), first stand, and first time welding!

Thanks in advance :)

With the top of the tank at 78", how will you access the top of the tank? With addition of lighting, will there ever be a time that you have to get in the tank? The top of our tank is 72". We can get in and out of the tank, but need a platform to access the top of the tank.

Fortunately for us, the 8' ceiling is only directly above the tank. When the tank is plumbed, getting in and out of the tank will be difficult. Of course, we will never have a situation develop where we have to climb in the tank once it's set up (I hope).

Platform to access the top of the tank. The hinged floor panels lift up to access the filtration under the platform.

My stands almost done, it's 120" x 48" x 42" high, go to last page. Hope it helps with your design?

There's removable front braces to slide sump and life support in and out. There's leveling plates/bolts since the garage is uneven.
There's removable brackets to might winch and also floor jack brackets for initial move.

First if you've never welded before. I wouldn't start out by making a stand that needs to hold over 2 tons. Welding is a skill that can't be learned in 5 minutes. Second as for galvanized metal, any welder would know that it is extremely toxic to weld and needs to be done carefully with proper ventilation and equipment. As far as size, I did my 750g out if 2x2x3/16" square tubing. 36" tall properly braced with gussets at each corner. My personal opinion. Find someone to weld it for you that's a l
