update guys: i went out today and bought a 29 gallon fish tank with the aquaclear 20, 100w tetra heater. I also have a Aqueon 30 i can use on the tank also. Would that be a good set up to use?

That would be a great setup for small fish, lots more options with this tank size. If you want multiple fish and you want them to breed, I would go for swordtails or platies or both. You could have a pair or two of each in the tank and they will readily breed. Could keep some small, peaceful community fish with them as well.
Another option would be a pair of small cichlids like rainbows for example. They will be more rewarding to breed IMO, because they actually have courting/mating behavior and will lay eggs then protect them, and defend the fry (or "baby fish") until they are large enough to swim off on their own. If you went with the cichlids, they would probably have to be the only fish in the tank. They do get large enough that you probably won't mind that however.
Whichever fish you decide to go with, you need to complete the nitrogen cycle in the tank before you put them in. There is lots of information on this online, here is an example of an article explaining it http://www.theaquariumwiki.com/wiki/The_Nitrogen_Cycle

Congrats on the size upgrade! That is a great size to start with. You can use both filters, of course! Set the tank up and cycle it as Gourami Swami Gourami Swami says, then you can take your time and research what fish you want in it. If you can, post pics and updates! It is an extremely fun hobby.

Thats good to hear, you won't regret it. If you are still interested in breeding I would recommend a pair of kribensis, a beautiful small cichlid that's very hardy and easy to breed. I don't think you would be,able to keep much else in the tank with them though.
Whatever you choose, be patient throughout the set up/cycling and let us know what you decide to go with.
