I do realise that the name of this forum indicates that it is all about large fish tanks, and i’m not sure how big counts as large. It is my 16th birthday soon and I am hoping to purchase a 40 gallon breeder tank which will be completely freshwater. I am hoping to keep a peacock eel, and some other fish or a lone flower horn as these are the only ideas I have generated. Could anyone give me some advice on some large fish that would be alright in this tank, as big as possible without being overstocked. I am aware that the biggest fish I could keep in this tank would be nearing 6” and wouldn’t get too much larger.

Welcome aboard

Unfortunately a FlowerHorn requires a larger aquarium. Don't have any experience with Spiny Eels but others will chime in with their thoughts. Also the Forum is not all about large aquarium's we educate about all sizes. Others will chime in with their choice of species for a 40 gallon breeder. Is this your first aquarium? Happy Birthday!

When the tank requires a sump larger than a 55 then it's large. Your tank is large only to new keepers and strictly nano keepers but that doesn't mean it doesn't belong on this site. You see, this site welcomes all types of fish keepers with all sizes of tanks. As long as you are respectful then no one here will have a problem with you going about your business regarding your 40 breeder.

Are you looking for something that has a personality? I'd look into small puffers. We have a few puffer lovers here that can help you here.
Something "cool"? There are some catfish I could recommend that will invoke a cool factor.
Something weird? We have people who are all about odd balls.
Plenty of cichlid lovers that could help you.
An albino senegal bichir would work in that tank, our bichir group is quite a nice bunch of folks who would gladly welcome you into the bichir cult they've made haha.

Honestly if your looking for an odd ball tank I would highly recommend khuli loaches, several peacock eels (as you've already mentioned) and maybe some glass catfish. If you'd be more into fish with personality I would recommend either apistogramma's or possibly a pair of angelfish with some corydora. And lastly if you'd want to dedicate the tank to a single cool fish I would recommend either a dragon goby or a red wolf fish. Granted these are all just my suggestions and I'm certain others will chime in with their own soon enough.

I asked J JxsPxxle . was this the first aquarium. Hopefully he or she lets us know so we can further assist them.

You could get green spotted puffers?
Elephantnose fish
peacock eel?

What do you mean? Canister filters work too. So the sump itself is larger than 55G. Ok. I've seen people with 100G tanks with a 40G sump

Happy early birthday! A flowerhorn requires a larger tank than a 40 unfortunately, but gives you a good reason to acquire more tanks in the future haha. Puffers would be super cool as Tom the Bomb and Fishhead recommended. In regards to your tank only being 40 gallons... who cares! This site is for ALL fish lovers! I was scared to join when I had my smaller tanks and I am now realizing that I had nothing to fear. Everyone is here to help and share their fish experience. Keep us updated on what you decide to stock your tank with! Good luck!!!

I'd recommend picking a fish you'd want to build the tank around, that is if you wanna go a more community route. It makes picking other fish to go with easier as it narrows down your spectrum of search, but you don't have to. I like the spiny eels although I think half banded eels and yellow fin eel are better options then a peacock eels, as they tend to stay at about 6in. A school of Buenos Aires tetras are kinda of an underrated option, they remind of mini Dourado with the red and black tail coloration. Glass catfish are another nice option. Smaller Hoplo catfish are another cool one. For a single Wet pet in a 40 you're pretty limited at that size, you could do a red wolf, although it'd be much happier in a 55 IMHO. I would suggest a Congo spotted puffer However they're rather expensive for someone at your age. You might be able to a single male Salvini cichlid. I think a Hairy puffer would be pretty neato. That's all really off the top of my head ATM, I'm sure more will come in with their suggestions.
