So now that I've witnessed a trend I wonder if this could be a seasonal thing? Do polys in the wild start jumping ship and looking for new water come spring or something? Any similar incidents like this last year around this time... These kinds of questions come to mind as one yet to conform, a heathen.

Thats a really good question.

I think it is more of a "crime of opportunity " thing. I have my jumper figured out

His side of the divided tank was sealed tight on the top with 0 chance of getting out. I am sure however he got past the divider to the pbb's side

The top on that side is only egg crate which he could have easily got through. The larger PBB could have been hunting/ harassing the smaller teug which led to the jump.

Not to difinitivly rule out a seasonal pattern, but do not believe it fits in this case.

I need to hurry up and get my pbb bulked up so he can go in the big tank (already shored up the divider)

Good question. I wonder since they are surface breathers and can last outside of water for awhile could they be like snakeheads who jump and walk towards other bodies of water. Hmmmmm hendre did mention SA is having a pretty rough draught atm

Okay, sorry to hear of your guys' losses.

with all the new bichirs I got, especially ropes, and really active teugelsi, I felt like I would have a problem because I have 2" gaps between the lids and the back of my tanks. I leave that gap to allow air circulation since bichirs breath so much atmospheric air.

anyways, old school advice from Anne, the original Bichir Queen, was to have a lowered water level, and as much as I don't like the way it looks in an aquarium, I credit that for the reason why I haven't lost any of my new fish to jumping.

We all should really get into the practice. I'll measure the water level to lip of the tank and post here later tonight, but i'm sure it's lower than those who have lost fish to jumping.

Now, as far as losing my three baby ornates, I messed up for AGAIN trusting congicus. 2007, it was the congicus that ate every albino sen I could find. 2017, the mini congicus, that ate a trio of beautiful ornates. :(

I lost 2 ropes but I keep my water level 4-5" below the tops so the snails have a place to lay their eggs the problem with running it lower is my hob filter has a problem lifting the water and the canisters outputs are right at 4-5" below the tops so if the water lowers they are out of the water

I do like the idea of the open air circulation. I also have a 1 to 2 inch gap from the lip to the lid. If the water level cannot be lowered(HOB), What do you think about egg crate as a barrier for it ?

Sorry to hear about the beautiful ornate trio. Those congis are nice, but it seems like they do love their snacks in previous posts I've seen.

Knock on wood i havenf lost any since i started duct/poly carb/acrylic combo. No way for them to getout of the 300 thankfully
