Starting over

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I saw you post this on CF,

“I only have fish collected in eastern Panama (east of Panama City and east into the Darien, that I have the ability to return with the same day.
For instance Amphilophus lyonsi is found in Rio Dupi (about 50+ miles west of Panama City, and into Costa Rica, one of the reasons I have probably never netted lyonsi where i fish.

Another cichlid Tomocichla asfraci, is only found in the Rio Guarama, Rio Guabo system, which is about 300 miles west and north (a 7 hour drive, under perfect conditions”

How far do you typically travel to collect? Do you ever make longer trips to some of these locations?

So far, east to the Rio Ipiti on the western edge of the Darien.
North as far a the Rio Boqueron, near Colon on the Caribbean,
and west to the Rio Chorrera.
All have allowed me enough time to catch the ferry back to my island the same day.

During Carnevale, we will leave the island, because the party gets too crazy, and require a 5 day hotel stay, so further jaunts will be possible unrestricted by the ferry schedule.

Maybe its fate, but in all these previous travels we have only landed 3 endemic species of cichlids so far,
Andinoacara coeruleopunctatus, Darienheros calobrensis, and Isthmoheros tuyrensus. (yes only 3)

Since its been about 2 weeks since the Lernaea were exorcized from the tank, and any carriers euthanized, so we decided to try to collect near the district of Chepo in eastern Panama yesterday.
It still the rainy season here, and all we were able to net, were Characins, and 1 Ctenolucius beani.

All fish inspected contained at least 1 Lernaea parasite, so we opted ¨not¨ to bring any home.
The water temp was down slightly form a norm of 82'F into the high 70sF.
Nitrate and temp below)

The pH range was also slightly lower dropping from 8.2 from daily and night rain deluges, to the mid 7 range. using the high range reagent

Looks like the tank will remain fish less for another 2 weeks, untill we collect again.

Duane at the OCA this year there was calobrensis avail…second year in a row of this rare fish at the convention

It is now about a month since the tank has been fish less so we went to collect yesterday.
Still the rainy season, and with many rivers still raging, we ended up at at a relatively sedate spot, at the Rio San Juan, just west of Panama City, under a highway overpass.

I worry about water quality this close to urban hub of Panama City, but the couple water quality tests l checked looked reasonable.
Nitrate (undetectable) and water temp below, a pH check below that.

Lots of Tetras were netted, but all were released, we only kept 3 fish, to check out the tanks purging fo parasites, all 3 that were netted, were caught in the riffles area, where current was strongest.
