So I've decided i'd ask for a 10g setup for x-mas this year, and I've planned out everything besides the CUC and the sole inhabitant of the tank. So for the sole inhabitant I've come down to either a Blue Devil Damselfish or Royal Gramma, and i'm leaning towards the damselfish. So my question is would a either of those fit comfortably in a 10g?

yes either one would be okay you could do both as long as you watch for aggression some damsels can be pretty nasty for their size. The only thing would be to make sure there are plenty of little nooks for them to escape each other and maintain good water quality with water changes.

Thanks for letting me know:), does anyone have an opinion about one or both of the two fish?

I would not put more than one fish in a tank this small. It is very difficult to maintain good water quality in a tank like this and having two fish would increase the problem. I also agree that they can be aggressive and a tank this small will most likely result in one killing the other or at least stressing it constantly. Realistically you should get a tank that is a little bigger, maybe 20 gallon, if possible. It will definitely make it easier for you. In a 20 gallon you would be much better off if you choose to get both fish.
With that said I think either one would do just fine in a tank like that. All you would need is a little sand, couple rocks or decorations, and some powerheads and/or sponge filter.

I'm not adding both into the tank, i'm choosing one of the two.

Good to hear. They are both nice hardy fish and it will be up to personal preference. A shrimp would be a nice addition to the tank as well if you have rock. Something like a peppermint would work in a tank of your size. Have fun setting up the new tank!

Thanks.:) I'll ask my parents which they prefer since they will pay for it.:grinno:

I currently own both. I like the Gramma better just a cool little fish it spends a lot of time looking over the rocks foraging. The blue devil is also a good fish but can be aggressive toward newcomers for a day or two if they are of similar size. If i had to chose one i would get the gramma. I'm not trying to say put both in a ten gallon tank I'm saying it can be done if you do it correctly. I know ten gallons is not a lot of water but I have done it in a 14 gallon biocube with a small percula clown as well, without any problems. Live rock, lite feeding, and frequent water changes.

I would say both of those fish are no good for a 10 gallon. Yes people keep damsels in small tanks but I would not. Royal Gramma's need around a 30 gallon tank and this is about what is recommended for Damsels. If you can get a larger tank then a 10 I would. Maybe something like a 29 gallon which would also allow you to get one of the two fished you chose.

If 10 gallon is the max look into a goby. There are some really cool small tank gobies. I would say go for a goby and a shrimp of some sort.

Well i was planning on bringing it with me to college, so i doubt i could get more than a 15 gallon.
