Durso standpipes are a much safer method of controlling water level in your overflows. In regards to flourish, I have no experience with that. perhaps run your lights less often, or perhaps get an algae eating fish that won't destroy your plants?

Does anybody know of any fish that eats algae other than a pleco that would go with bichirs and other large fish. I like plecos but heard they suck the slime coat off bichirs and stress them out

Chinese high fin shark. They eat algae and get large enough too keep with your other fish. Also haven't herd of them sucking a slime coat off of other fish.

My lfs told me a buchynose pleco will do fine with bichirs and I'm not sure if I trust them. Does anybody have any experience with that?
