So I've been thinking about getting some darts for a while and I've been reading around trying to learn as much as possible before investing in some and I think I'm ready to take the plunge. I'm planning on starting out with the more commone d. azureus and d. auratus. I think the thumbnail species will be a little too much for me at the time. I have a 20 gal terrarium that I will hopefully start setting up tomorrow. I'll be going out and getting some substrate(expanded clay for the base layer and coconut fiber and beaked moss on top) and some plants. I wanted to know what kind of plants I should be looking for and what else I would need to set things up. Should I get the UVB fluorescent reptile lights or will normal fluorescent lighting do?

Normal flouresent will do.
any kind of tropical plant will do that does not need a cool cown period and does not mind having it's feet wet.

Which are you putting in the tank Azureuz or auratus?

Also make sure you can culture FF BEFORE you get the frogs.
any questions and I am happy to help

I'm still deciding between the two. I was leaning a little more towards auratus because I wanted to put maybe 6-8 frogs in the 30gal tank and I read that azureus is more happy in smaller groups. Do you have a prefference having both of them? I think this might end up like fish keeping and I'll have a ton of 5 gal vivariums with as many dendrobates as I can get my hands on. Is it possible to have both azureus and aruatus together in one tank or will they fight? I read that its possible to cohab them as long as you watch out for interbreeding between the differnet speicies. thanks for your replies.

Been a while since I kept them but I had both and was told not to place them in the same set up as they would fight. I had two of the azureus in the same tank and they fought until one died. I was told they were probably both females.

A great source of supplies and info is Black Jungle:

They are located in Turners Falls, MA. Two very nice guys and extremely helpful. They built a hobby into a thriving business.

Good luck!

No you can not mix azureus and auratus.
6-8 frogs in a 30 gal is way to many. you can have 4-5 in a 30 gal tank.
Azureus do better in pairs and are more active and bold ( hence the reson not to keep the with auratus)
Auratus are said to be shy but i have a 2.2 group and see atleast 3 of them at all times.
Rule of thumb is 5 gal per frog so 5 gallons vivs are not a good idea. I keep the majority of mine in 15 gals ( LFS caught fire so I got all their tanks when they replaced them)
They are addicting I started with 3 frogs ( 2 tanks ) almost 5 years ago. Now I have a boat load of frogs and last count was 16 vivs. Biggest right now being a 75 gal vert in the works

Thanks for all the help. I've been trying to do as much research as possible but your first hand experience is unbeatable. One person told me that I could keep 10 or more frogs in the 30gal so thats why I was considering 6-8. He also told me that the two would be fine together. Anyways I'm shopping around for the expanded clay base layer and I bought a couple of plants that will hopefully work out. I think I've made up my mind on azureus. Can I keep 4 azureus in the 30 thats well planted and has a good amount of hiding spots? I've ordered the fruit fly culture kits already and I'll play around with those and a pet store near me sells fruit flys pretty regularly but I know not to have all my faith in them having ff's so I'm doing the cultures. Thanks for all your guys help and wish me luck. I'll be sure to keep you guys updated.

Sounds good. Thanks a lot, you've been really helpful. I hope to be ordering the frogs some time next week. I have some work to do on the vivarium. Also another thing that I came across while shopping for things is thermometers and hygrometers. Do you guys use those analog dials or the digital units. I dont mind investing in the digitals but I just want a reliable reading.
