Starving fish.

My orange pike stopped eating in November out of the blue for no reason. It actually was the most ferocious eater before that. About a month ago after I got rid of my Jardini the pike startedd comming out again and started eating like never before. I am not sure if he didnt eat a bite from then till now but I surely didnt see him and I shot alot of food down to his hole and the catfishes ate it all.

In the past, my Jewel Cichlid was left as the sole occupant of a 55 gallon tank while I was away for college. The tank was partially planted and lights were on a timer. He was fed about once a month. After talking to my parents, I was amazed that he lived. They had done no water changes, feeding once a month. However, the tank had no nitrites or nitrates in it.

My view is that fish in the wild don't always eat everyday, so fish in the aquarium don't NEED to eat everyday.

when we had only Jaws (big black piranha) he rarely ate more than once a week, sometimes not even that often.. but when he did eat he ate a LOT.. he would eat 5 - 8 chicken hearts at one meal.

with all the baby peacock bass i don't skip many days.. the tiny guys eat small amounts 2 or 3 times a day, the bigger guys (just over 1 year old) get fed once a day now.. sometimes not even that, they are in the process of adjusting to skipping days.

I like to skip at least one day every week. It seems to be working out pretty good too.

I like to think that smaller fish have to eat mroe often as they are usally quick and active like barbs and teras, however cichlids, large fish, gigas, anything that has a lot of weight can go without food for weeks and live off thier fat. I feed my fish everyday, and sometimes skip a day but I've never left it for longer than 2 or 3 days. Only cause I dont own huge fish.

Every once in a while, I skip a day or two, and have gone for five days while I was out of town. Everyone comes through just fine.

I just went out of town for a few days... left 20 white clouds in with my baby oscar, a couple of young acaras, a BGK and a couple plecs. The white clouds are FAST for feeder fish, so the other fish really have to get hungry before they are willing to put in the work.

That said, I came back and my oscar whi was smaller than both acaras when I left is now larger, so I'm guessing he got the lions share of the feeders.

My wife and I were seperated for two months...during which time my bichirs didn't eat because the tank was at my wifes...they all survived just fine. Of course I think they were eating snails...
