Mine used to eat hikari cichlid pellets so massavore should be fine lol. I don't know how I forgot to mention this last night but your best long-term option might just be a big piece of driftwood. He'll poop like crazy but they love it and I've read that it's an important staple for their diet. Mine parked under a branch plowing thru it all day but you could see exactly where he was hanging out the night before (especially with a white sand substrate)
