State of California Fish Jobs

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
yes, the Dept has 81 vacancies, though not all will be directly involved with fish.
the other jobs will get you in, as will any other state job.
One day, i will transfer out of CA Dept Of Vet. Affairs.

yes, it may not be for everyone.
for nearly all of us its a hobby.

I used to enjoy building things and working on cars. When i had to do construction or be a paid mechanic, i hated it.
maybe if i worked in a fish job, id start to not enjoy fish, who knows.
sometimes past times should just remain past times, but with few jobs out there, and even fewer that offer any kind of retirement, working for fish and game or any other government job is something to consider.

Any job is better than NO job. Working for the State does have many benefits. With economic conditions being what they are, there are going to be cutbacks, layoffs, etc., in a lot of areas. In my local department, everyone with less than 10 years got layoff/surplus notification letters last month. This year, two staff members who own homes here, had their positions cut and had to take jobs 6 hours away in order to still work for the State. As cutbacks and layoffs occur, people in other parts of the State who lose their positions may be able to bump someone in my department if they have more seniority. When working with the State, seniority counts for a lot, and may actually save your job....not to mention that your highest pay impacts your retirement pay. In these times of economic uncertainty, if I had a secure position, there is no way I'd consider giving it up for a position with less pay and an uncertain future.

I really want some job dealing with Bio. It sounds like you guys think fisheries aren't fun.

I was a bio major, now I'm a business major (which is unfotunate because I scored a 5 on the AP Bio test, but can't seem to pass Chem.) To what I understand, bio positions don't pay to well, so my new plan is too do something involving business, which will hopefully pay for my hobby!

yes, Dentists were one of the jobs announced to first lose jobs for the state.
next will be correctional officers, though CO's will get the opportunity to transfer to lower staffed prisons, and not actually "lose" their job.

Layoffs really are going to be 90% CDCR due to the release of prisoner's less so because of the budget, so other state departments are not going to be effected.
The release of 40,000 prisoners will cause CDCR employees to lose jobs, less so other state workers.

yes, for the most part Bio jobs don't pay well, unless you are a tenured university professor.
Could do BioTech.

I read there is a high turn over with the game warrens jobs because of the high risk and low pay situation. You will have to deal with poachers a lot of times. Meaning the people that you are going after have rifles and experience with using them from a far distance.

Anyone hear about some Florida jobs for me? Just in case I want to change from my current positions. I have a fairly recently-obtained degree in marine biology. I also have research experience and LOTS of professional fishkeeping experience.

As for my favorite nationwide job site:

Id try to get hooked up with a boating/fishing tour company while waiting for a zoo or public aquarium.
for university jobs you will usually need a pH.d.

Not really a job but I got to do a really neat volunteer project with the credit river salmon group. we went up to the humbar river and counted trout redds along a 1 km stretch of river. best part was near the end we saw 3 trout, with 2 of them mating.
