back in janurary i got a 3 stealth heaters from www.foster&smith.com. great service and products.

Here lies my new problem. today i decided to do a partial water change. I have 2 250watt stealths in a 55 gallon both set at 84*. I decided to move my fliter from one side of the tank to the middle for better/even curculation.

I had to move one heater and took it out of the water. I didn't bother to unplug it since it supposed to have a automatic cut off switch. but it didn't cut off. I was holding it out of the water by the side with the temp guage and the far end started to steam the water off. I ACCUALLY SAW VAPOR! at first i thought i was seen things. so i dunk it in the water again and took it out. I SAW THE VAPOR AGAIN. I turned down the setting to 68* and repeated the process. for the third time vapor again.

The water dried off so fast that algae where the clips with the suction cups hold the heater were turned white. I'll post the pictures to prove it too.

so now i'm wondering if this is normal? did i over react? and if its broken how do i get a replacement?

as you can see the suctioncup is still wet where there is algae on it. this is only moments after the water change. and there is no drying on my part. the white is where the heater dried the algae and turned it white.

kinda crazy.

I would imagine there's a rate of rise type sensor in the stealths. It would that a few seconds for the sensor to determine that the heater was out of water. I would just test your heater to see if it is still working properly.

well mine work perfectly fine and shut off, but you gotta keep one thing in mind, sure they shut off, but that doesn't mean they loose their heat right away......they are still retaining heat and need to cool off, that prolly why you saw what you saw.....

nope caues after reading the 2nd reply i decided to see if i pluged it in if it would heat up or not.

It heated up. no water and out of the water. i let it sit on the ground wondering if it would cut off. after a few minutes it never did.

i decided to put it in the tank and watch the temp. the temp is the same as before. so i think its ok. as long as it doesn't over heat and cook my fish, i'm fine with it.

Little off topic but why 2 heaters? One would do fine in the 55 gallon.
