I'm thinking about picking up some Buffalo heads and was wondering what are some good tankmates for these interesting fish? I want to add some to my Apistogramma tank but I'm afraid they will be too aggressive for the Apisto's. I do have another tank with Severums but then I'm wondering if the Severums will be too aggressive for the Buffalo heads? Just checking to see who's keeping them and what tankmates work best.

Crap, I forgot totally. Can a Mod move this for me? I am going to house them with South Americans but I did forget where i was putting this post. I basically want to house these in a Apistogramma tank but am not sure how aggressive they are. I have read they are very mellow fish.

I think they are better off with tankmates like severums and smaller acaras rather than apistos, as all the buffaloheads I've had would probably be too rough on apistos

Thanks bud, thats what i thought as well but someone at a LFS said they would not bother the Apisto's. Just wanted to check in with some folks that actually keep these guys.

It depends on the individual fish too..but just from my experience with them, even unpaired can be pretty tough on weaker fish

In my experience, buffaloheads are more bark than bite. Very mellow fish.

I had a pair breed in a 2'x2'x1' tank with some tetras and 1-2" little ones from previous spawns. They quit spawning when I added some Guianacara to the tank.

I think that severums would pick on them. Larger apistos would probably work but buffaloheads like some current in the water (and apistos don't).

Idea tankmates are Congo tetras. I kept mine with sailfin tetras...

Hi Matt. I quess the LFS wasn't so far off then? I've decided to skip getting the Buffalo heads for the time being until I can devote a tank to them and i will do it sometime down the road. Maybe by the time the ACA rolls around i can start planning for them again.
