Steel stands?

Also, this is hard to explain, but if the top is twisted and you shim the legs to where it sits level unloaded, it will twist the tank and stand when the weight is put on it. Maybe you can try putting the tank on the stand empty, and see if there is any wobble between the tank and stand. If there isn't, then see if there is wobble between the stand and floor with the tank on. This should give you an idea where the imperfection is.
I understand what you're saying and have thought about this, as far as I can tell there is a twist in the stand AND an uneven floor to deal with! What I was planning on doing is to put the stand in its final location and have my flatmates stand/sit on it, then use a level to see where it is uneven and by how much, and shim it accordingly. From my past experiences a [very] slight lean is alright but a three-dimensional twist is a killer.

Well, I'm interested to see how you figure out the happy medium between the floor and stand. Sounds like it is going to be a pain. Do you have a plan of attack yet?

Not really, I haven't even decided on a final location!! The garage would be ideal, but the floor is really bad and will requite more shimming. On the plus side, it doesn't have carpet so it'll be easier to see exactly how much out it is.

I think I'll just use the level and try to get the four bars that run front to back equally level, at the moment it looks like most of the twist is between the middle two.

Not to scare you off of metal stands but I just picked up a 55 gallon that had cracked seals from being seated on a metal stand that when the tank was put in was level but over time water weight weight of the tank etc... it binded and cracked the seal on the front of the tank and about 50 gallons of water on the floor.

Did it have foam between the tank and stand?

Adjustments? Do you mean shims packed under the legs? I'm not sure how else you could 'adjust' welded steel.

A good idea would have been to put screw out ends on the legs to handle an uneven floor.
