They call it "grit" here, it kinda looks sharp but I've used it with bichirs, loaches, and geophagus without any problems. I've currently got my ornate on the dark grey stuff, looks just as good if not better than on the red. Not sure if laps or endlis will be different though.

Doesn't matter where you put an ornate it will still color up. A lap would be a different story.

Take your time buddy. It may take 2-3 weeks for the bichirs to darken up and give more contrast on the pattern anyway.
