Step by step Noob 120g set up

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I did nothing to treat, and to my eye there are no more white specs (there were only a couple to start with). I'm not sure it can clear up on its own so after I get my heater I'm going to return the goldfish to the lfs and jack up my temp to 86. Throw a bit of salt in and wait a week or two before adding any more stock.

Day 10: Alright! Another day of fun and progress! I installed an air pump, some fake plants, a real plant, a common pleco, washed substrate, and some extra decorations I had laying around. Tadaaaa!

Some amazing news, wonder of wonder, miracles of miracles, I don't need any more substrate. 40lbs was great. Makes it about 3/4 of an inch all over.

Instantly after putting the decorations in the lepos hid in them. Here is just before decorations.

And some extras I did. This stuffed ray is actually a hand puppet too. I teach my kids about the tank by talking as stevie the stingray!

I don't know why but my tanks color is not green like it is in the pics.

I still need to put up the background, order the heater, figure a better looking air hose set up, and oh snap, that's about it! Checked my parameters and I got 0, 0, 10 nitrite. I expected higher but it was a strip test. I'll do liquid tomorrow to really see where I'm at in the cycle. Maybe we can start moving some stock over soon!

Pretty lame actually. Just running black felt on the glass back.

Day 11: Today I added a common pleco and a praecox (dwarf neon rainbow). They were in a10 gallon that I'm now using as a shrimp breeder. I actually got 20 red cherry shrimp in the mail today. I'm excited to try breeding a little farm of them. Man I love this hobby!

I made an order on petmountain.com today. The hydor heater, best price anywhere ($40). I also ordered some black air lines, black air line suction cups, and white air stones that anchor in substrate. Its gonna be good! Tomorrow I will put on that background I've been putting off! :banghead:

Day 12: Bad day. Ich is on the fish, and one Leporinus looks like its eye or eyes are bulging a bit. Today I put in two heaters I had laying around to get the temp up to 86 (peace out goldfish) and I dosed with salt (I have carbon in both filters so meds are last resort). That should wrote out the ich and hopefully this eye bulge is nothingor is ich related and will go away. I'm feeling down about the tank. This sickness stuff just means more time before I can get my very deserving fish in there. Now I'm even scared to move them in because I won't know when it is 100% disease free!

I need advice and encouragement. I only care about one fish I wish I had not put in (praecox). The rest are low priority to me - I just want a healthy task for my stock that I want to move. What do I do?

Goldfish did not go well for me this time. Next time, I'm fishless cycling. Cycle is going well but what's more important than a disease free tank?

Alright, day 13: I'm feeling much better today for several reasons. First, the heaters have the temp up to 86, the ich has already seemed to dissipate, and all the fish appear healthy, active, and hungry. I think I was imagining the slight eye bulge thing. Second, I visited, for the first time, the National Aquarium in Baltimore. I was like a kid at an amusement park! I thought it was funny that in their amazon section they had a lot of leporinus. I won't post all the pics here, I'll make a new thread, but I'm to tired tonight. So since I don't have a pic about my own tank progress, I'll post one from the aquarium.
