Sterilizing tank

I don't think I sterilized it too much. I just soaked everything in hot water and a little salt.
if you soaked everything in hot water then put it back in the tank.. you killed all your BB and caused you tank to short cycle itself.. and theres a good chance all the dead BB caused a massive amonia spike that is now killing everything else off..

yeah thats what i was getting at in a roundabout way lol but if you didnt use chemicals then it was prob an ammonia spike
Before getting more guppies, I recycled the tank. And after putting them in, I checked their water every day.
Guppies die on me all the time. I am convinced they have zero immune system from being so overbred and inbred. My best advice for keeping guppies alive is to try to get a litter born into your tank and go from their, they seem much hardier and long lived. alternatively try to find some locally, im sure there is someone who has extras!!
Instead of starting a new thread, Ill try this one. My tank has been running pretty consistently for around 10 years. It has seen 10 years of fish, new fish, disease, and medications. I have only replaced the sponges in my Fluvals, not the biomax, it was suggested I disinfect my tank and equipment. Could someone explain the procedure they have used for this?I have heard most use bleach, but I'm not sure of the correct solutions. I've heard ammonia could work better?? How long is the procedure? and rinsing? I'm running this thru my Fluvals right? What about my driftwood? Thanks guys!

I've never used bleach rocky I've always been worried about it causing issues but I know lots of people do so , whenever I've needed to clean something I've just used a bucket of boiling water and salt to soak it in , then a good rinse off with cold water , boiling water cleans-kills most things , I had some of that black fur algae stuff (not sure of proper name lol ) get out of control in one of my tanks everything was covered in it and it started clogging filters etc , the stuff was hard to scrub off Deco especially the wood so in the end I boiled the lot with salt it loosened it all up so I could remove it

Ammonia (NH3) is a cleaner. It's used to clean because it doesn't reduce colors on many objects as bleach will. Chlorine Bleach (NaClO) is better if you are trying to eliminate bacteria (disinfect.) Ammonia's kill rate on molds is good, but on bacteria is quite poor. The great thing about bleach is that it can easily be removed with doses of dechlorinator.
Also, never mix the two together as the combination can release toxic vapors.
