Sterlet Tankmates?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've never kept yellow perch but aren't they of similar disposition?
They are predators and will certainly take out small fish, but otherwise, they are much more mild mannered than most sunfish

Thanks for the info wantokeeptrout.

Have you (or anyone else) kept P. denisnonii in unheated tanks? A school of those would be my top choice if they would thrive in the cooler conditions. Fishbase shows their temp range at 15-25 C (59-77 F) and originating from Indian hill streams so it sounds likely but given their priciness I'm reluctant to experiment without some real-world evidence of success.

Anybody??

I had a friend keep 2-3 with dojos and white clouds in a 40 breeder with a temp of about 65 degrees if it helps. If you keep the tank at mid-high 60s and change the temperature of water the barbs are in slowly it should work out fine. be careful of the sturgeon possibly eating them though.

Dojos are on my short list of bottom feeders. My white clouds are doing well as are the bloodfins which are much more colorful. Odessa's are doing well also. Considering their temp range is about the same as the torpedos it's probably a safe bet they would be a good choice.

Thought I'd bump this with a couple of recent pics, sterlet on the sand and diamond mid-water. I'm still considering Chinese Hifin Sharks as tankmates. Anyone kept them?

Hi fin sharks are good with sturgeons. A buddy of mine has them together in a pond with kois. I have a few sterlets and recently for the past 3 months placed one sterlet about 5" with a juv jardini about2.5" at the time now 4". The sterlet is doing fine with the jardini and the sterlet is eating on a regular basis nothings changed. Temp about 77f. Just thought I'd toss that out there.

Have you considered going warmer?
Sturgeon can accept a wide range of temps according to what I've found on them.
I'm keeping my 7" shovelnose sturgeon in an 80degree tank with Clown knife, rainbow shark, syntadonis cat, and a few cichlids.
My endilicheri bicher ignores him completely, but I removed the senegal bicher 7" when I found him clamped down on the tail of the sturgeon.
The senegal is in my 65G until the sturgeon gets bigger.

Where did you get a shovelnose sturgeon, I'd love to have one! I had one about 20 years ago, believe it or not I kept it with elephant nose fish.
