This is my favorite lizard Steve. All of my focus has gone into him and I think he likes his new set up. He has like 3 inches of cypress mulch to dig but he compacted it. I need to add some more. Here are some pictures.

Who's that?

Thanks for the complements. Steve is about 30-33 inches long.

When I bought Steve they never told me I needed UV light. He is over 5 years old and never had any. My next monitor will have some right from the beigunning thow.

Thanks

Z

nice looking fella...how big is that cage...

3 inches of dirt is better than carpet, try and give him a digging tub just like that water tub with about 12 inches of dirt and hole cut up at the top. That way he can let loose in there.

MONITORS do not need UV. I remember the whole thing with the water dragons, but monitors live long lives and breed sucessfully without it.

And add absolutely as much burrowing substrate as humanly possible, cypress mulch doesnt work for that purpose...

Otherwise, he does look great!

Iguanids, with a possible exception of the Anolis, agamids, chamaeleonids and other herbivorous lizards do need UV. Other lizards do not need them and are successfully kept without.

Anyway, get more substrate for the bad boy, even if it means a digging bin.

Steve the Savannah monitor is a varanid. But still doesn't need UV.
