What to do ?

4x2x2Foot tank about 100 Uk Gal's .

Malawi Cichlid tank ,

Planted tank with Angel fish , Rams a few Clown Pleco and others ,

Or something else .

I know i have had Threads up about this before and on what type of fish work best with each other and how many of what ever fish i am asking about , but basicly i still cannt decide . It want be a few months til i do start setting up the tank so this is why i am asking now , so i can have a think about it .

It will be in the Living room of the house and my Mum and Dad have told me they dont want anything Dull and boring in the tank , it is my tank but they dont want everything they dont like . They have said they dont care what goes in it aslong as it is colourful and active .

What you think i should do ?

Was thinking on doing a Discus tank about 3 or 4 years back but got but off with all the storys of how good the water has to be ( perfect ) , died Discus after the smallest water change , Ect .

So thats when i thought i of doing a planted tank with Angels instead with Ram's , Tetra's and others .

Please post up what should i should stock it with if you think i should not do ever the Malawi or the planted tank .

Malawi.

You have the option to choose between juvenile discus which are less forgiving to mistakes and adults which are a much better option but at the expense of your money.

To begin with, juvenile discus (no more than 4" in size) require a barebottom size along with a few decorations for refuge. Why? They are easily stunted by the fast deteriorating water conditions caused by their heavy waste production and possible food leftovers since they do require plenty of feedings in a day at the expense of daily water changes to cope with the water quality. It is very common to see young discus with eyes abnormally large in proportion to its body diameter which is a sign the specimen is already stunted.

If you want adult discus, then go for those preferably ones at 5-6 inches in diameter. Start with no less than 4 in number. My reason for this is discus themselves also establish pecking order. If the aggression by the alpha is concentrated on the last ranking, then the bullied will starve to death from constant harassments. Keeping more than 3 will help spread out aggression thus minimizing the risk of them being bullied from getting their share of food. Adult discus can do well in planted tanks easily compared to juveniles therefore making them less forgiving to the water quality.

Throw the discus in the planted.
