Still Don't Understand FX5 Mania?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
God help me if I ever HAD TO sell it all, it'd be a black hole of financial loss.

Just for fun :)

My current setup

1) Truvue 300 gallon - $2150
2) Stand - $299(it was stratched up a little and the original owner didn't want it and it was gathering dust at truview office
3) lights - marineland double brights 48" x 2, $400
4) filters - 2 Eheim 2262, 3 Eheim 2028, 1 sunsun canister - $1800(the 4 smaller one are from older setups)
5) heaters - $75
6) 2 water jets - $50
7) Substrate - $50
8) Texas holey rocks - $300(from old setups)
9) Driftwoods - $175
10) 3-d background - $230

A divorce from this setup would prob feel like a real divorce...

You know I'd think tht would make a great thread. I'm thinking my Max I'll ever be able to afford or for that matter care for (limitations). Is going to be around a 240 (who knows) You know not just filters but just keeping a tank to the minimum to have it cared for properly healthy or not (meaning me). I have to plan out in advance just what to do on each day just so I don't over do it. But for me my Tanks are therpy just watching them and the sound of the water.

Well I sure have obligated myself to the larger tank. Made a trip yesterday for some fish I wanted. I wanted albino tigers which I got 3. Then I saw these beautiful Silver Dollars well had to have four. Then the purpose of my trip was a couple grown Synodontis (High Fins) that I have wanted. Then I spotted this awsome almost full grown Tiger(I mean he is such a vivid black and vivid red) well I had to have him. Then I saw this beautiful Knifefish I didn't buy him but I've got to have one... here we go again...spring lets see more FX5's or sump? What size tank? Lights? Can I completely care for a tank that large I'm on oxyen so my physical activity is in spurts but I'm gonna need the space:naughty::drool::drool:. More $$$$.....lol

One last question, I've never had a thread get this large you no its kinda on and then off topic? Do you split it off or just let it goes until it dies down? I just not sure what is proper? I mean I think its good conversation?

I just go until I get cited by the mods :)

Anyway for a 240, you are looking at a combination of canisters or sump(which you can do wet dry or submerged).

Advantage for Sumps:

1) great for DIY
2) Potentially can be made very cheaply
3) Open system
4) maintenance can be easier
5) potentially have larger capacity than canisters

con:

1) Open system - easy for people like my six year old to mess with(or other things to get in)
2) not as quiet
3) Some uses old secondary tank may be prone to leaks
4) unless used with a canister, difficult to have a backup in case of say pump failure

For canisters

1) easy to setup
2) modular design easily backed up or design redundancy in the system
3) closed system not easy to tamper with

cons:

1) for the easiest setup, hard to conceal intake and output ports
2) Can be hard to service
3) Some modules maybe prone to leak due to faulty O rings, lid design etc
4) more expensive for better models...not DIY friendly...

I have a friend here locally who has been breeding cichlids for decades. He has bred more species than just about any hobbyist I know. All his tanks are aquaclears and/or sponge filters. It really boils down to personal preference and big filters don't make you a better fishkeeper.

I'm no beeder but this is the logic I use ,,a 300 gallon p/h hob(ac70 ) x2 does a lot of filtration... throw in a big sponge on an ac 70 p.h. and that =all the filtration I have ever needed on my 90 show tank (5 ft.).....I dont even have to gravel vac very often...I PUT THAT ALL together for$ 75...so the moral of that story is...good ...cheap... filtration can be had(I would put the effectiveness of my filtration up against a big can +hob combo at 3-6 times expense anytime....)....

You know I wonder if I would have not been better off with a couple of 110's and sponges many times. I have tons of filtration (and this is not the fault of just the FX5 but I still get allot of junk floating around very often. Thats why I wonder if it could be the way I have the Inputs/Outputs setup on the tank. If you have a big hunk of goop float right past the intake isn't that a sign of a issue in the waterflow?

yes ,you MIGHT need to add flow....one way is a powerhead....as long as your doing that you might want to add a sponge to the powerhead....that would kill to birds with one (inexpensive)stone.....just food for thought...:)
