Still got no idea what these are!

if it is a normal commen LFS midas, i doubt it will end up barred. ive only seen 2 barred midas that werent from barred parents (not to say these arent, but im assuming they are from typical midas/rd lines). also, ive seen 'barred' midas at 6" change to orange, not all fry turn orange at a young age.

they arent zaliosus. no way. much too thick. i raised a group, and my biggest male was very thick for this species at 8"....but no where as thick as those fish.

grow them out a little more and see how they develope

I'm 99.9% sure they're definitely not a trimac. From research i've done they look most similar to a barred midas to me. But having now looked at a juv lyonsi I reckon they are almost definitely them. can anyone tell me anything or have any experience of lyonsi?

They didn't come from a lfs, this guy i got them from has about 20 tanks and picks up fish from all over the country (he picked up 3 12" bala sharks from me to create a shoal of 20!) and he'd picked them up while getting some other fish and then just gave them to me under the suspicion they were red devils. Therefore i have absolutely no trace of where they came from.

They all have a black spot at the tail and one large one on the 3rd bar from the tail and most have one or two smaller ones on the 2nd and 4th bar from the tail. I definitely think they could be barred as the bars and spots are getting stronger as they get bigger not fading away like they would in a normal rd/midas/lyonsi

hmm just found this pic of bared midas and spots are exactly the same as i mentioned earlier so i'd say that settles it

the little fella's still eating very greedily and showing absolutely no signs of turning red with the largest about 2" now. they do change colour at different times of the day as you can see in these new pics (love the one with the ram looking fearful in the background!) but most of the time they're a bluey grey with dark grey bars.

got a new vid of them playing with my clown loaches but did it from my mobile so not great quality

it will be hard to say for sure until they get bigger, but they definitely look like some type of midas/red devil-type cichlid. I have juvi Amphilophus amarillo that look very similar to yours. some midas/red devils change colors very early (~2" or so) and others may not change colors until much later (4" or larger) so it's hard to say for sure right now what they'll turn out like. just keep taking good care of them and no matter what they should be some great looking fish when they get bigger. :D
