Consult the "ray safety post" that is stickied at the top of the forum. Funny you should ask as I posted it yesterday. Print out that article and have it on hand, just in case. :)
 
The sting on the ray must command the upmost respect from its owner, so however close you get they could always decide to sting you if they wanted too. If you get stung get your hand in as water as hot as you can stand and then see your GP.

yea i would have to agree and that is a professinal doin it and im sure them rays have had it done since they were tiny

Yes, usually water q is perfect on major systems like that. Also, 99% of zoos/aquariums in the US use MS 222 (or something similar) to knwock the animals down prior to the trimming of the barb. They are recovered and set back to the display/exhibit. The animals are very acustom to being handled by their keepers.

I have done it, but like to stay away from it as much as possible. I equate it to pulling the teeth out of tigers so they don't bite. Not really a big fan of removing parts of animals.
