Sorry to hear that. I had 2 ray pups doing something like that but not a dramatic and it turned out to be stress related. one of my fish was terrorizing the pup at night but not leaving and wounds.
 
Mate I am gutted for you. It is heart renching when your pride and joys have something wrong with them but you don't know what it is and have no idea how to help them. I am going through some issues with a couple of my females at the moment. I am still a bit of a novice ray keeper and everytime something new happens i freak out as you never know how it will turn out. Don't let it put you off. Try and find out what the problem was and move on. Don't lose the ray addiction!!

Thank you all for the thoughts and encouragement. I've had rays since the late 80's, been on and off the hobby many times for different reasons but I'm never down long. Something like this just motivates me.....oh well, R.I.P. to my first hybrid. Hope I don't lose any more this way (fingers crossed) Life goes on.
