I have a chain-link motor who swims up the side of my tank to the top of the water and then slides down. He does this quite often lately. Also he will hover like a flying saucer about 8 inches from the top of the water. He is eating ok and looks healthy. Does anyone know why he is doing this?

how much and often are you doing water changes?
what does he eat and how often?
how big is your tank?
filtration system?
tank mates?
how long have you had your ray? it might just be finally getting comfortable with the tank?

your rays probably doing this cuz its happy and likes to swim in the current. my ray does this all the time. test your water if you really want to be sure...

general rule is if its eating its healthy!

got a pic to share?

Sounds like he is acting normal to me, wish mine would hover though.

going up the front of the glass and back is normal. floating on the surface doesnt. didnt someone have their ray doing this and there was something wrong with water parameters, and then sorted it out and it never did it again. he described it as a UFO?

My ray has been in the tank for about 2 weeks and is eating cut up nightcrawlers. I just did a waterchange and added some salt and he has settled down. I think he is just getting used to the tank. Oh, he is in a 233 gallon tank with 3 xp3's with a thin layer of fine gravel. Thanks everyone for your help. I have seen rays swim up and down the tank sides, but not hover.
