Stingray addict w/o hope must build bigger

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
was different in that you had to cover more and extra 90 which is hard to do with fiberglass and mat. doing 90s into a corner is fine but doing 90s out side corner is a challenge. And I was trying to be careful with making to much change for window seal to be perfect. Thats very important. should have worried more about sealing pond and then let the silicone do its job.

Interesting that that one spot was the leak. Was the plywood there different than the rest of the tank? Surface prep? Fiberglass or epoxy mixup?

Honestly I really liked the wood, yes it has its own challenges and thing you have to work on but also at the same point it was so easy to demo and remove and honestly the build was not bad at all. Cheers and love hearing about your setups. Best of luck

Thanks for the update. Most of these large DIY tanks stop posting and no one ever knows the outcome.

Hopefully you make it back into the hobby again. I gave up using wood many years ago. My longest lasting wood tank was 9 years and then several torturous years of constant fixes and patches and stress.

For your sized tank, tilt up concrete slab walls work well. Quite easy to self pour the walls in a horizontal cast, stand up, secure the corners and then pour the bottom. Coved corners and bottom drains even embedded wall jets. If you add key slots into the wall cast, the poured bottom locks in so the bottom can't float up and the walls can't bow out. For only 80cm high, 35mm thick walls would do. Add a sacrificial plastic sheet under the bottom slab pour if you want to demolish the tank one day.

High density concrete (42 - 50 Mpa) is already waterproof (first level). Adding Xypex crystalline additive will self seal voids if moisture occurs (level 2) and a paint on membrane layer (level 3) is a good way to add colour and add yet another waterproof layer cheaply.

Some of my concrete tanks are 20+ years old. I've gotten bigger and deeper as the addiction grows. Glass technology continues to improve.

Ditto was a good run, now its onto other play and fun. Theater room

Live and learn. The pond-tank had a good run. Build back stronger and bigger next time ?

Nice. I feel like in home theaters are even cooler than they used to be with the way cinema and streaming has gone lately.

But you're only kidding yourself if you don't think it would 1100x more BA with a ray tank built into the theater room somewhere.

It's still a work on progress but it's always been cool. Unfortunately huge speakers and subwoofer take up tons of the space.

I see what you mean, and I'm glad you consulted me for help with this.

The tank will go right under the screen, with mechanical in the room behind it (if there's no room, excavate one). At least an 8'x4'. The speakers can mount on the far right and left walls and ceiling.

If you got dough for that sound gear I'm lookin than what I'm talking is definitely realistic!
