stingray and MBU puffer

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I would be more worried about the Mbu wanting to rest in the sand at night and getting tagged from the stinger on the rays....no way would I risk that with my Mbu..

what is the chance they can co exist in one tank

i have a 900 gallon, 10'x4'x3'

stocklist

one 30" red arowana
three 6" indo tiger
three 13" parrot fish
five 14" peacock bass
five stingray size from 7"-26"

i know mbu puffer will eventually grow to 25"-32", and the one i just aquire is about 6". can i keep it in a long run.

none of my fishes eat live food, they eat mostly pellets, silverfish, mp, smelt.

thanks for all the opinions.

I have a 23" MBU, for over a year he lived with my rays, dats and arro. Then one day while watching TV, the ray was under the sand, the MBU is fed twice daily BTW, I noticed the MBU doing a headstand. He then start blowing at the sand to uncover the ray and then he went after it, removing half his tail past the barb as the ray was trying to get way. I also had a 12" MBU that lived with him and they got along great and again, one day he small MBU started taking chunks of fins off all the fish so I had to remove him as well. The MBU now has his own tank. It may work for a while but most likely you will see some missing body parts, fins and see dead or missing fish. My 23" MBU ate all my flagtails, I even watched him do it. So he is alone now.

Scott ....... is your mbu eating the pellets, or just smashing them up for entertainment value?
I'm not really sure if it's eating any or just smashing them up. I'll watch a little closer and see what is happening for sure.

A ray would have no reason to "tag" a sleeping mbu, a ray will never sting by accident, if a ray wants to sting something it is likely to never miss but equally it will not brush past something and sting it by accident. The mbu would need to threaten the ray and even then the ray would swim away, bury or threaten first like a scorpion, then if it were still threatened with no means of escape or maybe continual harassment it would then sting.

i have bare bottom, the mbu is small only 5inches, yesterday i put it together with three rays size 7"-10" in 100 gallon. of course just one day nothing happen.

today i move three rays to 900 gallon, the mbu puffer will be alone for three days, before my bd pups join it on monday. i plan to keep puffer in 100 gallon until it reach 8"-10".
