Btw these questions are in no way a troll or a flame.

My question arise from the perspective of LFS setups---they normally have a 10-20 gallon tank that showcase the ray, and the "machinery" behind them is a 1000-5000 gallon filtration system.

Personally, it boils down to this, if u had 5-10k to burn, and you don't really care how ur "show tank" would look, but rather, ur mainly focusing on the ray's health and "happiness--what would you do.

To answer both of your previous posts...

Some of this is personal choice, nothing more.

BUT, give the Rays room to swim, therefore surface area. The volume of an 8X2X2 is roughly the same as 6X2.5X2 but the rays can turn around more easily in something 2.5 wide (front to back)

The sump is a far superior filter than a cannister or any other filter by sheer volume of bio area plus flexibility to add in extra hardware (all hidden) Heaters are much safer in a sump for the rays too!

I would spend some of that money on making water changes easy...I have had a drain fitted to my floor that feeds my flowerbeds with waste water from the tank, there is a carbon filtered mains supply to the tank and I have an automated water change which drains and refils based on an irrifation timer, it is just down to me to hoover the sand once per week (also plumed to the drain) this is all hidden below the tank along with the sump.

The sump has a filter sock which can be emptied daily and this stops much waste even having to be dealt with by the bio load.

There is also a hidden cannister as a back up which I look upon as a backup for when the sump is cleaned (i.e. there is always a fully mature filter)

Therefore my answer is buy the biggest tank you can fit and afford first time round and add the biggest sump underneath. Nothing else compares IMO...do not worry about small rays in there, they will not be small for long!

well you are going to want alot of floor space so thats key with rays also. and what im thinking your asking is about doing the water changes maybe as doing a bigger percentage or something? i think that the more bb you have the better yeah you still need to do some water changes but if this is your concern do a drip system and that is constantly bringing in new water. but the bb is keeping the water quality good and the wc is taking some bad water out and adding in new nutrients and so forth. but a drip system this is constantly happening so that would be your best bet

well sorry to double post but just read tobys reply and he said it all there add a drip and sump and your good to go

My tap water seems to come from deep in the ground (on mains supply) it is free of Nitrate but VERY cold.

I think a drip for me is a bit too constant cold so I am automating my drip to every other day and only for a few hours each time then larger water changes at weekends.

Hmmmn it might be too much "work" for a drip system. I have a few people *cough (GF) who is all about aesthetics. I'm placing the aquarium into my new "office" and in order to get plumbing through, I'll probably need to have a wall knocked off, and do plumbing and etc. So that probably won't fly.

UNLESS!! WTT GF for drip system.

Hee Hee, I like your style!

Seriously though, water changes are a big part of Ray keeping, if you make it easy then you will do it more often and not resent it.

At the very least see if you can plumb to waste (simple hole to outside?) and invest in a good auto reel hose etc....

That is currently the plan, I have a window, that goes straight to the garden, so I can probably "water" the plants by doing that? Then I'l probably use the piping in the garden and install my own hose.....

wait whats an auto reel? hmmmn, I believe i have my sprinklers on timer, would that work? just put a sprinler into the aquarium and time it?---if it goes wrong= flooding though haha. Imma give this some thought!

it wouldnt be hard to do a drip. since you can plumb right outside the window to get rid of the water you can take a little line and bring it in just a small hole in the wall behind the aquarium and no one will know the difference. or just have the gf help with water changes alot and then she will give in. and if she likes helping then that makes it easier and you get to spend time together so win win either way. and you can hide a large sump in the stand just get as big as will fit with pipes to it.
