ive just removed the barb of my motoro stingray out of the jaw of my polypterus lap. the area is swollen and bloody, it could of been there for up to 24 hours,is there anything to help treat him? his swimming normally at the minute

I think youweird he right thing in removing it. I can only suggest keeping the water clean and add some salt. You gotta ask why the polypterus got tagged.....it must have been having a go at the ray which means removing the polypterus. There are no accidents with rays, they only ever want to hit.

Wow thats crazy!!! Glad it wasnt your hand!!!!

Just do everything to reduce stress! Leave lites off for a few days and change 50-60% of water and dont let your nitrates exceed 20-25ppm and he'll be fine! Just let him be and a tblsp of salt/couple gallons would help or stress coat.

polys are pretty damned resilient and can live in the harshest kinds of water that other fish can't. it should come out of it just fine, as the barb didn't hit any vital organs.
nitrates won't be an issue for the poly, but clean water does speed up the healing process.

thanks for replies, ive added stress coat and my water is religously kept at optimum condition and levels.my polypterus and rays have been together for years and work great together.maybe it was a barb that was discarded in the sand and my bichirs love to dive into, would explain why it was in his jaw

Bichirs are known to take bites out of rays' disks. I lost a lap when he went after a newborn pup when I was out for a run. Both died. Sad story but learned to keep the species separate, especially when there is a prego female due soon.

That sucks and i wanted that lap

update of lap.....checked and still swimming normal, think i caught him eating aswell jaw still swollen but looking better. i wouldnt normally risk the two together either but as my tank floor space is huge i did and its worked great for years.my stingrays discs never have bite marks and they all choose to rest together.
