Hello all,

I am planning on building a fishtank coffee table. I am not set on what I am going to put in it yet (stock wise). I am thinking of making it a stingray tank. I have never had a stingray before, so stating that I need some epert advice. I have been researching good stingrays to have, hysterix, motoro, etc... I am not set on what I want yet.

My biggest concern is the dimensions of the tank. I want to get small stingrays so the tank does not need to be huge. Some tank dimensions I was thinking of doing is 48"long by 18"deep and 17"high. Would this be suitable for a small (5-6") ray for a couple of years?

If you have any advice on what species of ray to get, and tank dimensions I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks,
Mike

I would never dream of stocking for a tank that I do not have, so if you wanna go ray coffee table, you better go big. Not vertically big, but footprint big.

I know little to squat about rays except that they are kinda difficult to keep and EXPENSIVE! But I would assume they need a large footprint because of the length of the tail...

A 48" by 18" tank will hold a baby ray for 6 months to a year, maybe, depending on species. An adult ray of one of the smaller species (as in only 14" diameter as adult), will need something no smaller than 72"x30" (LxW). Height doesn't really matter except that it adds volume to the tank, which is good. Most rays get 24" in diameter or larger, and they will need something more like a 96"x48" tank minimum to be kept happily.

Motoro's get up to around 24" in diameter as adults, so a 48"x18" tank would not work for them at all.

If you want to know about keeping rays, check out the specific forum for them. The people there will be able to learn you all you need to know :)
