Stingray, could it be my next step?

Hi,

Just looking into freshwater stingray currently, and just trying to see if i could house one. Im looking to buy a new aquarium for my bedroom soon, after ive just hit 10 years of keeping Coldwater and freshwater fish in small 15 gal tanks, and now i plan to get a larger aquarium for some more advanced fish. I was looking at stingray and tea cup stingray, i was wondering if anyone could tell me these..

1.) Min aquarium size, with 1 and a few other fish and minimal ornaments.
2.) smallest stingray breed that is legal in the Uk.
3.) Any requirements? or can i just keep one in normal freshwater?
4.) cleaning, could this be a problem with stingrays? do they actually sting? and is it a problem?

Guesing u don't want to grow out the tank, I would look for a tank that's about 6' long and 2' wide, when it comes to rays its all about floor space so that means I'd be looking at a 180 gal or 210 as smallest. You will need a good filtration system bc these are messy messy guys. Look in to histic stingrays, they tend to be hardier then the Retic's, though some stores will pass of Retic's as histics. Histics are also little smaller then retics.

Ok so for other fish ur fine with peace full larger fish that won't fit in the rays mouth. And number of other fish is dependent on your filtration system and tank size. Treated tap is ok, RO water will make them happier. The stinger is defensive. They can be really friendly, being stung isn't much of a consurn, just don't step on the little guy

Hystrix.

Having seen how big most of the other sp. get the 6x2 footprint will only be temporary.

keeping other fish works, just gotta do the homework and when it comes down to it, it's just like any other fish, each have their own temperament.
 
Do i really need that big of a floor space of an aquarium!? ive seen stingers in a 70gal, 4' x 2' that are fully grown, like the tea cup?

Pretty sure tea cup ray is just a hystrix or retic... You could get some dats to fill the rest of the tank!

yeah..a big tank is a must...look at it like this. I could live in a closet if i wanted too...
get a long wide tank. i wouldnt get anything smaller then a 2 and a half foot wide and at least 6' long.
as far as "being stung isnt much of a concern"...it is. Rays get spoked easily so you need to be careful.
also "tea cup" stingray is a LFS title that really means nothing...no ray stays the size of a tea cup.
 
Thanks everyone, will have to see if i can house one, would i ever get away with a 5' x 2'?

They're not full grown. The smallest full grown ray is going to be at least 12" across and 24" long. A 4x2 or 5x2 tank is not appropriate for them.
