If it's the snake head it will usually be bites at the edges too. If you have a slum tank or some overhead or IOS, put the heater there to avoid such burns.

the snakehead is such a little guy though ..

like 5inch or 6inch's, compared to the ray @ 9-10inch's ..

but when i think about it, the ray likes to hang out in the current near the outflows & guess where the snakehead likes to chill, behind the outflows.. lol so maybe its a territorial issue going on.

Is there a pleco in the ank? To me it doesnt look like heater burn.... More like a pleco bite

I had this problem ( not with rays though) so I put my heater into my HOB filter. Works perfectly and actually heats the tank more efficiently.

i cant stand pooping factories ... lol

i put the snakehead up for sale hopefully somebody up here picks him up.

I cant imagine a Dat or a Cuda doing this.

Could it be the bumblebee cat or the spotted raph cat???
