I purchased a California Ray a few weeks ago and seems to be doing fine, eating well very active. Today I noticed it arched up somewhat and its disc a little curled around the edges and then went about swimming around its pond 60" round pond about 100 gallons for now. I remember reading someones forum about some ray getting the death curl and thats why i am concerned. I dont see anything visible on the ray like sores although its dung is kinda rubberband looking or a little stringy. I dont know what it should look like. Any help would be appreciated.

thats the way their dung always looks. and dont over react with the disc, the disc will not always be flat to the ground, if theres a current it may curl up because of water flow, or just random muscle movement. The death curl is pretty obvious. And it doesnt usually happen with activity in between, in my experience.
California rays are great! I have two and they have so much personality. They let me pet them and they greet me like dogs when i enter the room. They beg. Its awesome. haha a great addition.

Ok thanks, thats a relief. I just checked my parimeters and all is good except my co2 level looks low according to the tetra test kit. First time I check that and I dont know how accurate it is. Buy the way what do you feed your rays? I have been feeding it raw shrimp, squid rings, tuna steaks, flounder, is that ok?

I feed chopped silversides, krill, shark formula, chopped
Table shrimp. I think wild rays eat crustaceons and inverts. Not sure about the fresh fish. They love silversides though. Maybe just add a vitamin? Don't really know. Don't know about co2 levels either but I would think low is better?

Not sure about how much to feed at a time either. The person i bought it from said they fed it like one shelled raw shrimp cut in 3 or 4 pieces a day, but this guy will eat way more than that if i give it to him. Like you said, a neat pet and my grandchildren just love it. I want to get a 7' plastic pond (500 gallons) so I can get another one or two.

Watch the kids and the stinger I hope!! The poSt about the death curl was
Me. I have force fed rays. It gave me a general idea of stomach volume. I try to match what I think will satisfy but not overfeed. How big is the ray?

Its 7 1/2" across the disc, so its possible to over feed ? Yea I do watch the kids, dont let them put their hands in to much and just let it rub against them for the most part or gently rub it as it swims by, but my 29 yr old daughter cant keep her arm out of the water, she loves it!

Oh about feeding again, I read some articles that said feed small amounts several time a day but thats kind of hard when you work all day

i guess several small meals a day is always the preferred method, especially with juveniles. But 7.5 " is a decent sized round ray. I would think it needs more than a single shrimp daily. Maybe one morning and one evening, minimum. There should be people on here that are a little more qualified to answer your questions. Moderators especially.

Made some homemade food squid, shrimp, tuna, flounder, garlic, nori and some Lifeline that I had in the freezer. Run it through the meat grinder and the ray wouldnt touch it but the fish sure ate it up. Maybe its the garlic.
