Can/do they do this? I noticed earlier today my smallest ray was shedding some slime coat around her tail, but was active and looked otherwise normal so I didn't think overly much about it other then I was going to do a water change on the pool today anyways and I check the water then... well went down started the change.. went back to doing other stuff did my standard 40% wc and while filling took a good look at her.. her whole body is now flaking... looks like when you where a kid and put elmers glue on your hand and peeled it off for fun. She's active, responsive.. cruising around the tank like normal.. no redness ect... but she looks like a reptile that's shedding its coat... water tested before water change 0-0-10ppm... now its obviosuely less then that.

No changes in anything this past week except hubby and his uncle did some work on the pipes in our basement replacing old galvanized w/ PVC... the windows where open the whole day in the basement and I had a fan blowing air away from the tank to keep fumes to a min.. hubby also put up a plastic tarp from ceiling to floor to keep debris out ect.

the other 2 rays in the tank look fine, the rest the fish in the pool look fine... plenty of room.. ect...

I've never seen any of my rays do this and if I didn't know the water test results I'de swear it was ammonia burn except no redness discoloration ect... I will try and get a picture of her but its hard to do in the pool. The last water change was done before the plumbing ect so approx. 5 days ago give or take.

If this is not normal the plan is to do 50% daily for the next 3-5 days...

The only thing I can think is have you made a current/water circulation change ... whether its more current or less current both can influence a fishes slime coat .... I'd also say that if the fish is acting normal then thats good, but also good to be proactive if/before it gets worse ... my catfish shed their slime coat like once every month or 2, makes kind of a mess of the tank and I dont know why they do it either, but they've been doing it since I got them and no ill effects that I've noticed

:screwy: She's fine today.... i'll keep my eye out and do another water change tomorrow if I notice anything... But when I checked on them this am she was scooting around blowing around in the thin layer of sand looking for worms i'm sure. can't find the slime coat she obviously shedded either.

She was fine all day.. then last night she started curling... this morning she was covered once again in slime coat shedding and dead at the bottom of the pool  idk if its a freak bacterial infection or what? every other fish in the pool is fine.. which scares me the most.. not knowing why this happened or if its a nasty disease ect.

Sorry to hear. Your right the worst thing is not knowing.

I've only seen this once and in that case it was a huge drop in ph.sorry for your loss

Yeah I woulda expected something to have gone wonky.. but nothing has.. and the PH i'm 100% isn't the issue as I have a Cuban gar in there with them ( even more sensitive ime then the rays to Ph instability and the gh/kh/ph all tested 7.6ish every test) he hasn't been effected at all. I really hate losing a fish and not knowing why.

Have you got any pictures of the damage

I did see a Leo once shedding its slim coat once in a shop once 20 years ago I had never seen nothing like it and have never seen it again

I wish I would have but I didn't stop to take pictures even though I know better.. even when I flipped her over these was no sign of redness/swelling ect... my other two both ate fine tonight and I tested the water once again.. fine.. and took the time to really look them over and neither has so much as a blemish.

It looked like her slimecoat went into hyperdrive and just didn't stop.
