That doesn't look like a roofing nail at all. unless your using some crazy 36d nails or bigger! Just going to go out on a limb here but I bet that would have hurt worse if it sepereated the two rather than hitting bone. That would have to put so much torque on your bones seperating them so close to the joint.
 
Anyone ever have an unknown death in a tank that lives with a ray, well maybe that will explain some deaths to other fish.Hmmm... something to ponder.
 
To me the pictures are not real, the sting does not look like it came from a sting ray
