what would be better substrate for a stingray sand or seachem flourite? the flourite feels very soft and i think it would look more natural but will it harm the ray?

IMO, flourite would be really bad for rays. Stick with sand.

Silica is very bad.. most play sands and pool filter sands contain Silica.

Make sure you rinse your fine sand really well.. some rays are more sensitive to substrate than others.. apparently Motoros don't care much.

A very fine gravel would be the best choice to allow water to flow through and not compact.

Barebottom is even more ideal, IMO..

has anyone had any experience with 'estes marine sand' ?
it is the only sand i can find for sale in my area

Marine Sand is bad because it is calcium based and will buffer your pH..

not to mention it is sharp.. Aragonite is bad, too.. before you ask.

I'm using a sand..called Shirui..not sure what it is actually..it did brought down the PH initially.. so far my motoro loves it..

Well the one i was looking at is not actually marine specific, they just call it marine sand (i dont know why). I checked the website and the one for sale here is non-buffering and says its safe for fw and sw fish, also it does not feel sharp to me. Should i still stay away from it?

I use the Estes Ultra Reef Marine Sand. Safe for fresh and saltwater aquariums. That is the stuff you want.
