I use the Estes Ultra Reef Marine Sand. Safe for fresh and saltwater aquariums. That is the stuff you want.

I do as well and my rays love it but I found that motoro's look nicer on the light color sand than the black but my leo's look way nicer on the black. Just something to consider.

I have the beige colored sand. My motoros look really nice on it.

well im actually building a lid and stand (well not a stand just something to cover the ugly metal tube stand that i am sick of looking at). I have the lid almost done (just waiting for paint to dry) then i can put the lights in it and im also putting a small fan in it to try and keep things somewhat dry. im painting everything black so i figure why not get black sand too :)
I think it will look nice, i'll try and get some pics up when i get the lid on, then i can start on the stand...

So just so I am clear, can you use pools sands or playground white sand as long as it is washed throughly, or you can not use it for rays?

Silica is very bad.. most play sands and pool filter sands contain Silica.

probably stay away from it.

There is a local place where i live that has one of the best selections of fw and sw fish i have ever seen and for their teacups and whatever salt water rays they keep they use home depots sterilized playbox sand. it has silica in it but non of their rays are effected. i bought fine playground sand from lowes for my teacups (that i bought from them) and they have no problem with it and it contains silica. appearently from what they say more people in our area use silicated sand because its cheaper and as long as its treated properly before the rays get introduced they have no problem with it. i put 100lbs in my tank filled it up and it look really nasty with all the murky water and i spent 9 days doing 50 % water changes everyday and then went from there. i guess it just depends on the ray. i always wondered why everyone says dont use silicated sand but doesnt sand naturally have silica in it.
