Stingray tail need help....

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yes I am sure of the parents... I think she looks great what do you guys think? Sorry about that picture that was when she was in the 55 gallon tank I had her waiting in until the 180 was setup...

Trevor

By the way those are just wood chips you are seeing on top of the sand... These are some pictures just taking in the 180 she is currently in... Let me know what you think of her...

Trevor

she looks nice, def needs some different food tho, something with more substance she is on the skinny side

I could be wrong but it doesn't look to me to have true Hystrix in her, but rather "Peruvian Hystrix". True Hystrix were banned for a while and became pretty rare in the hobby until this year. Doesn't appear to me to have any Marble in it.

Pics of the parents would definetly clear it up.

I have to agree with Mr. Turk here, the ray needs to be taken off live food and given a Prazi treatment as soon as it's off live. Given tail size I would expect it to have internal parasites.

Prazi treatment? I have never heard of it... Shes eating earthworms every other day right now and on occasion (once every other week) she might get some feeder shrimp.. she hasn't had small crawldeads or rosies for a while now...

Trevor

Prazi = Internal parasite medication.

If shes ever been fed live she may have them. If she does have them she may not show any signs, and they may not have any ill effects at this time, but they are added stress, this in combination with other mildly stressfull things such as poor water quality are a perfect recipe for potential disaster long term such as a shortened overall lifespan.

I'm no expert on keeping rays but I have had a lot of them and have had them for a while, I've had more then my fair share of problems with them. IF that ray was in my tank I would be taking action. Like I said the tail appearence would lead me to believe she needs a little TLC.

Not telling you how to raise your ray, but rather offering advice that may yield an improvement in the health of your ray.

Ghost shrimp are very expensive in terms of the amount of nutrition they offer your ray. Good for sick or freshly imported rays to entice them to eat but I wouldn't view them as part of a regular diet just cuase of the cost factor. Nightcrawlers are good for beefing them up but the must be offered frequently. My lil pup that's just a couple months old will eat 3-4 crawlers a day, but they must be offered 2-3 times a day.

rays should be fed 2 times a day when young and you can get away with once every day as they grow, ghost shrimp dont have much to them as db said, the shrimp i am talking about is market shrimp (frozen store bought shrimp) cut it up in little pieces, what db is talking about in the tail is that that is where they hold thier extra fat, and yours seams very skinney in the tail section. I would suggest feeding her more, 2-3 worms a day and work into market shrimp as a stable diet or frozen silver sides. Also unlike other fish.... you cannot over feed a ray. So feed her as much as she will eat.
