Stingray With Kois

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I know kois are cold water, but I am wondering if it is safe to keep them together. Will the koi attack or mess with rays? Anyone have ever keep them together?

No I haven't but it is possible that the koi pick on the rays discs looking for food.

i wouldnt think the koi would attack them or anything. they dont have teeth to do serious damage. koi's are more middle to upper swimmers. only time they really stay in the bottom is when they eat from sinking food. koi's are friendly. in my opinion it would work. if you do so. i would worry about parameters for the rays then koi's. cuz like i said before koi's are hardy 4 season fish that pretty much can live in any condition. keeping the water clean and feeding the rays would be the biggest concern. as koi's poop a lot. and koi's are eating machines they will get to the food before the ray does.

yes you can but as with everything the rays are very curious and will try to fit everything in their mouth. i think every fish i have put in with rays has been pinned against the glass by at least one of the rays has been sized up to be an edible meal. even the largest fish and whilst they may not get eaten they may suffer enough damage to kill them and to be quite precise i woke up one morning to find a blind and finless pure white large butterfly koi amongst my rays. i had to despatch it for its own good and had to remove the other.

so yes you can but it carrys the same risks as putting any other fish with rays. ... rays are aggressive when they want to be.

ive seen them kill large arowana by both killing them and by chasing them to the point of escape or damage. ive seen rays pin oscars gars and kill plecos and the plecos as well as eels.

well, this is gonna be my first post on this forum. I've been a koi keeper in my past. When living at parents and i was always tempted to heat the water of the pond. But parents keeping an eye out on the electricity bill etc. What i always understood was koi do great at a temperature 24 degrees celcius to 28 degrees celcius (75.2/82.4 fahrenheit). But being said they are a 4 seasons fish. They need a cool down period. Temperature a bit lower. This is off course with optimal settings. I never had the oppertunity to try it.

But yeah koi are hardy. And oh yeah i forgot. I think size would be a thing. No juvenile kois. And like they said before. Koi's need lots of filtration. And they eat the food you throw in in seconds my sturgeons had a hard time getting there food being at the bottom. (sturgeon also a bad idea to heat up the water this high)

With me being new here, yeah I always did well with kois and i signed up at this site because im looking to get into aquaria and predator fish like Potamotrygon and Arowana. Trying to learn as much as i can. And off course i will be having a huge tank. Not willing to have fish to suffer.

And correct me if im wrong. Im here to learn to

This is a 6 year old thread. im kinda curious. Did u try it?
