Stingrays and dat

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Where I live the tapwater is usually Ok and not high in chlorine, however if they find a bacteria in a test they ad lots of chlorine, to the point it smells like in a puplic pool. One change with that water would seriously harm my fish.

If we can rule out chemical burns I would look for heavy metals like copper, is your tapwater safe to drink ? They can cause irritation und scaring of the gills.

Another thing could be simple stress, you have a bare tank with not a lot of space.

Is everything alright with your filters ?
How hard is your water and what is the pH ?

I would treat a bacterial infection with tannins and as high of a temperature as possible.

Parasites can be treated that way aswell, but not all of them.

So it’s better to make a test on tap water to be sure.
Yes the tap water here is ok to drink.
So I should put sand and some driftwood from now or better on the new tank?
My ph is 7,4 and my dgh is 11.
What do you mean by treat with tannins? Using catappa leaves? 29 Celsius is ok to go? Or higher?

Sorry for the many questions and thank you so much once again for helping me.

Your pH and dgh are fine, so there is no issue from that.

I would recommend adding sand in your new tank to make them feel more confortable.

29 is fine, if they are sick you should go to 30-32. But I don't know if the datno can take that. You can use catappa but any non poisonous leaves will do. I personally use European Beech, a friend of mine Oak, but they take a 2-4days to really start releasing them. Catappa should be faster.

The issue is that we still don't know what the problem is. So its hard to tell you what to do.

I personally would ad some some zeolith powder to calm the water (always good to have on hand, really good at absorbing unwanted stuff, especially if you have a nitrit peak), higher the temperature to 30°C, turn the lights off and ad the tannins. If you have sth. they can hide under put it in, but only if they wont hurt themselves with it.

All of these lower stress (except the temp) and benefit the fish health while not being damaging themselves.

However those are just some basic steps, if they have a serious infection they will not be enough.

The problem is that here it is very difficult to impossible to find available sheets to put, only sera are available and they cost a lot. At some point I had ordered from abroad but they took a long time to arrive. Could I try something else? Even in medicine if you think it would be a good choice. Temperatures I will raise gradually to 30 and depending on the behavior of the dat gradually if he tolerates it I will raise up to 32. How many days will I have to keep it so high? I will add extra air pumps for extra oxygen. I'm going to get some zeolite today.
Sorry for my English if I don’t use them good

Where I live you can only get good medicine from a vet, and noone wants to sign anything for fish. The stuff you get in the store is often not good and kills a lot. So I can't tell you anything positive on meds.

Are there any leave bearing trees where you live ?

At least 2 weeks at that temperature.

Put as much oxygen as you can into the water, and feed less to lower the waste.

You can get zeolith powder at most pharmacys, its just overpriced there for what it is. I grind my own. Make sure it dissolves well in your water, the cloudyness will go away in a few hours to two days.

As you saw the fish in the videos, could the issue be in their gills? If I chose to go with medication what should I look to treat first? Right now in my cupboard I have metronidazole, praziquantel (I don't know how to dissolve it in water), formaldehyde, epsom salt, table salt, tremazol sera, nematol sera, bactopur sera. I would be afraid to take leaves from the trees in the area because we have a lot of smoke.

Salt makes your fish produce more slime and formaldehyd kills them. Rest of that idk. Like I said I dont have much experience with medication.

Tremazol might help if they have parasites in their gills, but we still don't know wether or not that is the case. Ideally you could take a probe and look at it under a microskop.

Try to catch a look of the gills of your datno, they are a lot easier to see than the rays, and look for any signs of infection (slime, redness, particles...)

You can wash the leaves, but I understand your concern. Is there a forest nearby ?

Thank you once again for your help.
I will try to catch him and check him today.
Is a good idea to use salt just for case?
Today I saw some strange poo from one of the stingrays. Is this normal? Yesterday they ate shrimp and mussels. I haven’t buy the new food yet. Saturday and Sunday is full of work.
The photo is after feed that’s why so many floatings

I am not a poop knower so I can't tell.

Salt i fine for Stingrays, I think datnos aswell.

I found this table for medication, its in german but google translate should do

The 2nd table is what kills stingrays !!

If you catch the datno, take a probe and look at it under a microscope, that will be very telling. If you can't do that I would just observe him in the water.
