so I’m new to rays, and I know the dent in the forehead is a example of an underweight ray. What else should I be looking for? What is a juvenile good looking ray with proper weight look like? I just want to make sure I’m feeding enough.

Newborns should look a little disproportionate. Most are born with a large fat reserve (or should be)

In young pups (same as above) you are looking for a high back/hind quarters. That is where fat reserves are stored.

Healthy well fed pups have a thick base at the tail as well. Larger rays should flatten out a bit but still be thick like below. Especially the tail.

Awesome pictures and info, thank you! What is your feeding schedule like for ~5in Rays? How much and how often? Currently mine are eating black worms, and chopped up red worms. He took frozen krill twice so far it’s hit or miss.

Thank you. No problem at all. Young pups never less than twice a day. I consider 5” a young pup. I go cut earth worms straight to pellets at 4”-5” so I’m not sure the conversion amount on black worms. Just try to make sure it has easy access to food and that you are removing anything uneaten after an hour or so past each feeding.

Well the red worms I chop up, and feed him like 2-3 worms per feeding 3 times a day. The black worms he gets an unknown amount because his tank mates devoure them too

Are these your hystrix? They are typically thicker than other potamotrygon species. Post some pics.

I will post tomorrow, I only have my male at the moment, I’m getting my female this week.

Ok. What size are they, and what are they eating? The male you have now.

The male is about 4-4.5”, the female is the same size. I feed him three times 2-3 red worms chopped up, the I feed black worms to the tank and he eats those as well. He hasn’t fully accepted frozen krill yet once took it once or twice, I was thinking of going to get ghost Shrimp tomorrow too
