right on, is there anything that i can put in there to reward the work? as in some sort of feeder that hides in sand and would act as a part of their diet?

Mine do this all the time. I use a big syringe to inject blackworms under the sand. I do it in a few spots, it gets them looking all over for them. They seem to really enjoy it. Once I convert them to pellets, I don't know what I'm gonna do.

I use the same methed of syringe only I use blood worms. And by the way my retics will devour ghost shrimp. Never seen them catch one they didn't eat. My wife and I give them 10 or 20 once a week as a treat. I don't know who acctually gets the treat more my wife and I or the retics. Like a cat sneak and pounce. If that won't adict you nothing will. Pluss I think it is healthy for them to get to hunt.

Just throw a couple ounces of blackworms in there and the rays will have a great time digging them out of your sand. If you drop the worm in one spot, some will find their way into the sand or gravel and your rays will thank you for it. Mine eat pellets and market shrimp so the worms are more a treat than any thing else.
