Would like to know why they don't allow stingrays to be kept in home aquariums in Texas. I know they are worried about people releasing them. Why can't they come up with a way of knowing who has one and keep track? Like you could pay a fee and register them to be able to own one. Don't mean to make it sound like your trying to buy a gun but couldn't you do it this way?

It would be hard to regulate, especially since they can be bred in home aquariums...

Couldn't they allow one per household, and so forth to keep that in check?

But then there'd be people that would try and get around that rule and they'd have 1 in there house and one in a buddies house and as soon as they have there back turned will start trying to breed them and sell them for boatloads of money. It only takes 1 person to ruin it for a whole bunch of others. However saltwater stingrays I believe are legal just not freshwater.

That's true, never really thought of that. Guess I'll have to move up north to own one. Love Texas too much though.

+1 theres some nice fish that are outlawed here, but I think that the natural beauty and other characteristics makes up for it

Think of the man hours and work it would take for them to verify and check on people having stingrays. The permit fee would have to cost a couple thousand just to help cover the costs.

Even if the government did try what you are saying, the results can be disastrous. I'm a title II gun owner and have to deal with registration with the ATF. It's amazing how incompetent the government is at maintaining a registry. After nearly 80 years they still can't get it right which is one of the myriad reasons I'll never accuse the government of being competent.

If the gov't did put something into place to moniter rays, the cost would be offset by the permitting expenses. The millions of dollars in cost would be spread to what....maybe 100 people who want FW rays in Texas? So you end up with something like $20,000-$30,000 for a permit per year to keep a single ray. It would also mean you are open to the idea of agents coming into your house and checking / searching at any given point to enforce the permit you hold.
