... u have use your better judgement and take the time to really look at what your about to buy and that is what a royal gt is to me.

One of the best answers in this thread, closest to staying on topic anyway. Thanks big train! :)

I personally don't know how you can make a comparison here. The top pic is taken in more natural lighting without a flash. The second looks like it was taken with a flash and maybe a better camera.

This is hard to explain, and I'm lacking in eloquence at the moment to which I pass the blame on 'BASS ale'.

When I compare those pictures, I'm looking past picture clarity, past the difference in lighting, and relying on countless hours spent comparing live specimens, photos, video's etc.. under different lighting setups.

Truly, although the lighting in the photos is different, along with the clarity, the comparison can be made validly with a trained eye. I'm serious when I say I've spent hours upon hours staring at GT's across the media spectrum.

I see the differences, and not the obvious ones.

Very interesting thread. Cohazard, your detailed descriptions seem to fit this one below, I think. I found mine at a local pet store @ 3.5" TL for $18.00, not bad for what he turned out to be, but he was already a looker when I first saw him. Some recent shots below that I also posted in a few other forums:

You're right, that's exactly the standard of GT I'm talking about! :)

Gorgeous!

I for one dislike the term ROYAL, it just gives a reason for royal additional prices. I find that most GTs sold can look as stunning as any other GT with good diet and proper care. I recently bought 2 saums with the belief that they were Silver Saums, once I got them home and got them on better food with regular water changes they coloured up and turned Gold. They look so good that i could sell them a royal's and I have 2 people bugging me for them as they know I am after Silvers.

They traits circled in the picture in post #25, the yellow patch can be found on most GT I have seen, angle and lighting helps bring it out. The colour in the fins can be brought out through good diet and unstressful environments. I also find that the blue on the fishes face to be inadequant for a title of royal.

The two pictures are of my GT, he is a Silver so the brillient red border is never going to be present, other than that I prefer him over the pictured royal. To me his body pattern is more pleasing, his black dot bolder and deeper in colour, there is more pattern on his face. I like the white paleness of his chin. And even though he is not a royal and I am using a crappy old 2megapixal camera with out using the flash to enhance colour I can still get a shot of the yellow behind his eye.

Just my 2c.

The picture in post 25 belongs to the guy I was trying to explain my point to. I circled those areas and told the owner of the photo to compare those areas I circled on the other fish.

There we go! These are the kind of answers I was looking for. "What makes a quality GT to you? specifically" But I guess more users value their opinion on nicknames rather than detailing what they look for in a fish

I like your saum too Nova 8. It doesn't have all of the specific details I look for in a saum, but the white chin matches the saum which is really nice!

Yes, I get the quaility you are talking about, this guy looked like crap when I bought him and he has coloured up really well, the pictures don't do him justice. But the term royal is not one I agree with, who deciedes what a royal is, its the shop keep. So all they have to do is get a batch of GTs and pick out say 5 of the better looking ones and call them royals and bump up the value to boot. If you are willing to buy a royal instead of searching through a tank of 'normal' saums for one that may or may not look better, then thats your choice.

Also what do you prefer, Silvers or Golds. I prefer Silvers but I like golds whilst they are gold, when they go red I feel it takes away from the blue in the body.

I like them both the same, but I can't find any silver saums around here. I've been looking for a few years at different stores, and nothing. :(

If I can find them, I want to pick up 2 or 3 male saums with thick silver saums.

K so this green terror isn't royal, or a member of the clergy either.
But he is a Dr.
Err... at least named after a Dr.
Here's -
Bruce
Robert Bruce Banner
(some of you may know him as the incredible hulk...figured it would be suiting)

I once picked up a group of seven silvers or so it thought, only to have them turn into golds in short order. These fish were 4 inches when purchased.

That's what Nova 8 was discussing too. I never knew they went through a color change, so that's pretty interesting to hear.

Were their tail fins very clear and had not developed the purple arrows yet?
