Let’s start with an arbitrary 30 gallon tank.
What should I put in it?

I’m thinking a Jack Dempsey pair with a few goldfish, because fish need friends. Why would a Jack Dempsey be named after a famous boxer if they didn’t like to have friends? Boxers have friends! Also a common pleco for cleanup because every tank needs an algae eater.

(Only one rule, keep it somewhat reasonable, but whatever you do don’t make something that actually would work - something that somebody may actually try)

2 clown loaches! They don't need a minimum of half a dozen, a pair works fine since they have each other to keep company. Plus they'll only grow to the size of the tank.

A 30 that’s easy an Oscar.
Seriously though I remember my grandmother having a comet gold fish get 8 inches or so In a 10 gallon she kept that thing like 12 years or something.

Plus 1-3 tiger barbs (long finned!). The Spruce Pets is dead wrong about this, we ought to prove it to them too ? ? ?

When kept singly or in groups of two to three, tiger barbs will terrorize almost any fish that is unfortunate enough to reside in the same tank. Yet if they are kept in groups of a half dozen or more, they will usually keep their quarreling to themselves. Regardless of the numbers kept, it is never advisable to keep tigers in the same tank with docile, slow-moving, or long or flowing-finned fish such as the angelfish or bettas.

I'm definitely subbed to this thread. I'm setting up a 30g shortly and was at a loss what to do with it. Keep those ideas coming, i'm going to end up with an awesome set up.

This is exactly why I joined MFK, to pick up the best tips from the pros.
